Do Your Values Sabotage Your Success?

November 29th, 2007

If there are certain areas in your life where you are not consistently getting the desired results, it can almost always be traced back to a values conflict.

Here are a few examples I have come across.

I once worked with an accountant (let’s call him Alan) who had big dreams and grand plans about setting up his own business. It was a partnership. However, Alan just could not bring in much business to his current partnership and felt frustrated with himself.

When I analyzed Alan’s values, I found that his top towards value was success (definition: when I achieve my goals). That explained why he wanted to do it so badly. Unfortunately, his top ‘away-from’ values were ‘rejection’ & ‘failure’. He felt rejected whenever
someone rejected his ideas or his services. He also defined failure as ‘when I do not reach my goals’.

Do you see the big conflict here? It’s no wonder Alan could not reach his goals. On the one hand he wanted to succeed by bringing in more business to achieve his sales targets. On the other hand,he never took any action to solicit for business or come up with
creative ideas because he was so fearful of rejection and failure.

So he felt stuck and frustrated all the time.

Until Alan changes his values to align with his goals, he will never get what he wants.

Spiritual Growth & Money do not Mix

There was a woman who came to my seminar who learned that what was holding her back were her two top towards values, in lingerie they seemed to be in conflict. Her no. 1 value was spiritual growth. Her no.2 value was money.

So, every time she worked hard for money, she felt guilty because she felt that making money would make her less spiritual. In the end, she felt totally unfulfilled.

Love and Freedom make for Conflict

Another guy discovered why his relationships never lasted for long. His top value was love (he felt love when he was in a steady relationship). On the other hand, he had freedom as a top 2nd value (freedom to him meant not answering to anyone and being free to do
his own thing).

Whenever he was single, he would be driven to settle down in a steady relationship (driven by the need to feel loved). The moment he was in a steady relationship, he felt like he had no freedom, so he would unconsciously sabotage his relationship and become single again, earning his freedom.

As a result, his relationships would always break down within three months or so. The way this guy set up these two top values just tore him apart.

As you can see, it is not just how we rank our values that determine whether they empower or limit us. More importantly, it is how we have learnt to define these values.

Change your Values, Change your Life!

When you change a person’s values, you immediately change the way they make decisions, the way they behave and ultimately, their future.

For example, if you took a person whose number one value was ’security’ and swapped it with his number seven value of ‘freedom’, what would happen?

You would literally change his entire decision making process and the direction of his life. From being satisfied in a comfortable corporate job that gives him perceived ’security’, he may suddenly decide to become self-employed and start his own business!

The problem is when we have values that conflict with coco chanel quotes other or are not useful in helping us live an exceptional and fulfilled life.

Right now, you have the choice to start designing the values that will drive you to get the best out of yourself.

So, I want you to think, ‘How should my values be arranged so that they propel me to achieve my life’s goals?’ ‘How can I define my values in such a way that they empower me to take action?

We must remember that the values we have today are not the result of conscious choices we made in the past. You never consciously chose the values that you have today. They came about mainly because of conditioning from your environment and the significant people in your life.

If you find that your life values are not arranged or defined in a way that will propel you to achieve your goals, then surely it’s time to take charge and re-design them!

Filipino Food Alternatives to Junk Food

November 24th, 2007

You’re starving after a long day at work, but there’s nothing in the fridge. So you run to the nearest store and grab something to eat-a bag chocolate chips, a candy bar, or a can of soda. This is what a typical afternoon is like for a lot of kids and young adults. Unfortunately, it can hardly be accessories healthy eating. Junk food is loaded with empty calories-calories that have no corresponding nutritional value. Basically, they make you fat but don’t make you any healthier. Before you know it, it can take its toll on your health.

If you need to munch in between meals, Filipino food is a much better way to fill up. Native snacks are a lot cheaper than store-bought foods, and they can satisfy those cravings without piling on the pounds. Here are some Filipino food recipes you can try in place of your favorite junk foods.

Junk: Burgers

Better: Spring rolls

Many parents argue that burgers aren’t all bad. After all, they’re basically a one-dish meal: you’ve got your starch, protein and vitamins in one bite. But you also get an unhealthy dose of trans fat, the leading cause of heart disease, obesity, and a host of other conditions. A lot of Filipino cooking recipes are also one-dish meals, but few of them have as much trans fat. With fresh lumpia, you can throw in your choice of meat and vegetables and control your serving portions. Cut off even more fat by going vegetarian or choosing regular flour instead of egg wrappers.

Junk: Candy bars

Better: Banana cue

The average candy bar has 300 to 500 calories; a two-piece banana cue has 250 or less. That’s because chocolate bars are loaded with high-fat ingredients such as nuts, caramel, sugar, and of course, chocolate. The sugar will give you an energy boost, but you’re not likely to burn all those calories before you’re tired again. Bananas are sweet, but its main ingredient is starch, a much better source of energy. Before eating, blot out some of the oil to further reduce the fat content.

Junk: Soft drinks

Better: Sagot’ Gulaman

A glass of soda contains the equivalent of 12 tablespoons of sugar-that’s more than you consume in one whole day! Soft drinks are a major cause of obesity in developed countries. Even diet sodas aren’t completely safe; the aspartame used in place of sugar is linked to a number of health problems, including cancer. If you need to freshen up, get a glass of sagot’ gulaman-a banana-flavored beverage with bits of gelatin and tapioca balls. It goes well with banana cue, turon, and other light Filipino recipes.

Junk: Doughnuts

Better: Puto/Kutsinta

It’s nice to have something sweet to go with your morning coffee, but there are healthy wys to get that sugar fix. Instead of those fat jelly-filled doughnuts, have a double treat of puto and kutsinta instead. These little cakes are made from rice flour, which is infinitely healthier than the white flour used in commercial breads and pastries. Because they are steamed, they retain most of their moisture, making them more filling as well. To maximize your calorie savings, skip the cheese and salted egg toppings.

Junk: Milkshakes

Better: Taho

Next to soda and beer, milkshakes are one of the unhealthiest drinks invented in our time. The combination of milk, sugar, artificial flavoring, and whipped cream topping pack a dose of fat and calories that will take three hours of exercise to burn off. Instead, help yourself to a cup of taho-a warm drink made from soft tofu, sweetened with sugar syrup and garnished with sago (tapioca balls). It’s a little heavy, but several times healthier. It’s also a lot cheaper-10 pesos will get you a large cup, while a regular milk shake can cost over 100.

Junk: Ice cream

Better: Tropical fruits

Often, when you’ve topped off a great meal with a bowl of ice cream, you find yourself craving again in less than an hour. That’s how this sweet treat works: it sends a handful of fat down your system, and makes you hungry so that you’ll want even more. It’s great at children’s parties, but on regular days, it only works up your appetite. If you’re craving an after-meal treat, grab a mango, pineapple or some other fruit instead. Mix them together to make your own Filipino desserts recipes. Fresh fruits fill you up fast, so you can curb your cravings for more than half the day.

Cheesecake - A Brief History of the Worlds Greatest Dessert

November 12th, 2007

It is said that the Greeks served it to the athletes after the first Olympic Games. So, it’s a good choice for your Olympic and even your Super Bowl parties. You can entertain your guests with everything that you know about the history dating cheesecake and why it’s appropriate for athletes.

Although the nutritional content varies, it is not unusual to see six grams of protein per slice. By comparison, a slice of Boston cream pie contains only two grams of protein per serving. If you’re worried about sugar or carbohydrates, cheesecakes can be delicious without adding sugar or using flour.

Of course, it’s really difficult to make them at home, even if you’re an excellent chef. It’s easier and actually more economical to order one and have it delivered in time for the party.

Do you find the different varieties confusing? Here’s a quick rundown. The most popular cheesecakes in America are New York style. This recipe combines heavy cream, cream cheese, eggs and egg yolks for added richness and a smooth consistency. Cottage cheese is sometimes added and lemon is often used for flavoring. True NY style has no crust. The outer edges are baked to a light golden brown, the interior is light and creamy. Only a hint of lemon is added for flavoring.

British and Australian
They don’t bake or cook their cheesecake. It’s made by mixing soft cheese, sugar cream and gelatin. The mixture is chilled till it sets and served cold. Sometimes, chocolate, Irish cream or raspberry is added for flavoring.

Italian
Italian style is based on the old Roman cheesecakes, which called for the use of honey, ricotta, flour and bay leaves. The modern recipes uses sugar instead of honey, omit the bay leaves and Victoria’s Secret vanilla extract for flavoring.

French
Neufchatel cheese provides the flavoring for the French style. It’s appealing to some, but not to others, as the taste is stronger and vaguely reminiscent of mushrooms.

In the US, the equivalent of Neufchatel is known as “Farmer’s cheese”. You are likely to see some varieties, such as Pennsylvania Dutch, that list this ingredient, instead of cream cheese.

Added Flavors
Fruits, nuts and chocolate slivers are often used as toppings, as well as the more traditional sour cream topping that many of us are used to. Other flavorings, such as pumpkin and spice can be added to the cake itself.

You can get crust or no crust varieties. It’s a very flexible dessert that can be tailored to suit anyone’s taste buds. One popular choice, particularly for parties, is the “sampler” cake. At http://www.cheesecakedelivered.com, for example, you can order a sampler with two slices of nine differently flavored cheesecakes. What more could anyone ask for?

Caffeine Caused Anxiety Attacks

November 9th, 2007

Since the dawning of the “Information Age” in the early 1980’s the pace of change has accelerated in our society. To keep pace with the explosion of new information jewelry this rapid rate of change, many people have adopted a new coping strategy of increasing their consumption of caffeine. Caffeine is a drug. It is a stimulant which increases many of same physiological responses as the survival response known as the “Flight-Fight” response. It is this reaction by the body to the stimulation from caffeine that can trigger an anxiety-type physical reaction. Many people are unsuspecting and naïve regarding the full extent of this response to which often includes a common, and even, celebrated “rush” of energy. Knowing about this response can keep you from being a victim to caffeine related anxiety attacks.

As a cosmetics the effect of caffeine can be different from one person to the next. The amount of caffeine consumed, and then the amount actually absorbed by the body, can contribute to the range of reactions. It is not uncommon for caffeine to cause an increase in brain wave activity that can arouse a tired mind. This is the most desired response for many sleep deprived people. This can backfire on many people who may have a day long response to their morning coffee (or other caffeine source) because many people can not sleep well at bedtime as a response to this early caffeine consumption. This “vicious cycle” will then cause poor quality sleep/rest which requires more caffeine to get “up” for the next day’s activities.

The stimulation caused by caffeine can also increase heart rate and for some people increase their blood pressure as it simulates the release of excitatory hormones like adrenaline (epinephrine.) This rapid heart rate, when severe, can scare people, triggering the hormonal release which can cause a greater anxiety reaction. The frightening response to the physical associations of an anxiety attack can cause fear and can even drive people to the emergency rooms with the concern that the patient believes that they going to die from a heart attack. We have enough anxiety in our society without pushing ourselves over the edge with the stimulation of caffeine.

Caffeine can cause an increase in skeletal muscle tension as it triggers the classic flight response. This muscle tension can be distracting (loss of focus), cause fatigue, and in many cases increase the likelihood of increased muscle spasms and so, muscle contraction pain. In this way, caffeine can contribute to muscle tension headaches from the tightness of muscles in the jaw, neck, and shoulders. For people suffering from chronic muscular tension pain, this can contribute to their tension and pain. It will often cause an increased anxiety driven response to their pain which can intensify their chronic pain complaints. This is especially true for lower back pain and neck/shoulder pain, as well as the peripheral pains in the arms and legs that can be associated with back pain.

For those of you who use caffeine regularly, you should also know that there are plenty of cases of physical and psychological addiction to this drug. Many people feel withdrawal symptoms that are not comfortable when they try to discontinue their caffeine habit. If you want to discontinue, the best way to do this would be gradually over time. Substituting ½ de-caf into your morning coffee and minimizing other caffeine laden products will be helpful. Be patient and drink extra water!

In its defense, caffeine can be helpful for some types of headaches such as migraine headaches which can be reduced by caffeine or associated cafergot. (Cafergot is a brand name of the combination of ergotamine and caffeine.) With its stimulating effects on the digestive system, caffeine may also work as a laxative to minimize problems with constipation. Historically, European coffee “salons” were places where intellectuals could meet and have lively discussions while drinking brewed coffee which was more healthful than the untreated available water which was often contaminated with deadly diseases of the Middle Ages. The other alternative beverage for most Middle Age Europeans was to drink beer or alcoholic drinks which did not encourage good discussion, thinking, or productivity.

Since the 1980’s, our society has seen an explosion of coffee houses and Espresso stands. You can not get through any American city without being confronted by easily accessible purveyors of liquid coffee refreshments. Both young and old are caught in this “glamorous” habit with expanding zeal. A gift of choice is the insidious gift certificate for the expensive coffee houses. This has gotten to be big business.

Besides coffee or espresso drinks, caffeine is found in many products. Black teas, green tea, soft drinks, chocolate candy, and as an additive in many other products are but a few of these additional sources for caffeine. There are even a few products with commercial names like: Jolt, Red Bull, and RockStar that cater to the young caffeine crazed generation that seem to require higher concentrations of caffeine. I do not want to deprive people from indulging in these products, but people must be aware of what the effects of these products can do to their body’s and to people who interact with caffeine saturated folks. Many cases of “road rage” may be traced to the negative effects of over-caffeinated, stressed drivers.

Let’s have some common sense. Moderation is a great rule to follow, especially if you are one the people who are most sensitive to the effects of caffeine. Coffee businesses are not bad or the enemy, we just need to learn how use them in most appropriate ways.

We have all enjoyed eating chocolate candy, right? I believe we have even watched documentaries on how it is done, and maybe visited a factory, like Hershey’s, and seen it done.
