Can I Forgive an Affair?

Since I very often share stories about surviving an affair (even emotional ones), I’m asked a lot of questions about healing, forgiveness, or moving on.  Two of the most common questions I’m asked are variations on “can a marriage survive an affair,” (the answer to this is yes)  and “how can I really get past or forgive the affair?”  The spouse who has been cheated on will often tell me that although they really want to work things out, save the marriage, and move on, they are finding it very hard and are getting caught up or stuck on the forgiving part.  Many just feel that the betrayal of an affair is unforgivable and something they are never entirely able to forget. But, they also know that continuing to dwell on past issues without moving forward and holding bitterness in their heart is just going to choke out their happiness as well as any honest chance of a healthy, healed marriage. So, in this article, I will discuss strategies and tips that will help you forgive the affair - not for your spouse who cheated, and not even for your marriage - for you - and your own emotional health.

Understand That Forgiving And Forgetting An Affair Are Two Different Things: Many people mistakenly think that if they commit to forgiving an affair it means that the slate is wiped clean and they have to then pretend or act as if the affair never happened.  This is just not realistic and it’s unfair to ask this of anyone.  Like it or not, an affair becomes part of the history of your marriage, just like other marital issues like in law problems, money discussions, or a health crisis that you weather through love, patience, and communication. And, you don’t necessarily forget these things either, but they help you improve your communication and marital skills.  Any marital issue or crises can either help bring the two of you closer together as you rise to the occasion united as a couple or it can tear you apart if you turn on one another and place blame or cling tightly to bitterness.  In that sense, an affair is no different, but because it encompasses such a devastating betrayal, it’s just unrealistic to think that you could ever forget the affair, although you may chose to forgive it.

Forgiving An Affair Is Not Turning A Blind Eye Or Letting Your Cheating Spouse Off The Hook: Many people tell me that they hesitate to forgive because they think that if they do, it would show that they have no self respect or are being a door mat.  Another thing I often hear is “if I forgive him, he won’t really respect me and he’ll just do it again,” or “forgiving him means I’m not holding him accountable for the affair.”  I understand these concerns, but they don’t have to be your truth.  The fact of the matter is, forgiveness is really something that you are doing for yourself, not for your spouse.  Many people chose to forgive because the bitter and negative feelings that stem from holding on will eat you alive and tear into the genuine happiness you may eventually feel.  Even if you don’t want to save your marriage, you still need to let go of the resentment and hurt before you can really move on in a healthy way.

Things That Can Help You Forgive The Affair: Often times when people tell me that they want to move forward after an affair, but they just can’t seem to do it, I can often chat with them a bit and then dig deeper to determine where they are getting stuck.  Almost always, they are unable to move forward because the spouse who cheated is, for whatever reason, not giving them something that they need to heal. Here are the things that most people are going to need from their spouse in order to forgive the betrayal:

1. The spouse who cheated must immediately stop all contact with the other woman or the other man.  I understand that this can be difficult. Many affairs happen at work so this can be tricky.  However, even if you have to change jobs or move, this is very necessary.  It can be very damaging to your marriage to have the person with whom you cheated as a constant reminder of the grave mistake that was made.  A wife who is trying to forgive cheating and who must kiss her husband goodbye every morning when she knows her husband is going to see the other woman at work is going to have a very hard time forgiving and letting go because she is having to relive the pain every day.  For a marriage to survive infidelity, a fresh start on equal ground is needed. You can’t have this is the third party is still in in the picture.

2. The spouse who had the affair must completely understand the fall out from the affair, take responsibility for it, be genuinely sorry, and take the steps to ensure it never happens again.  It’s so important for the spouse who cheated to understand that, in order for your husband or wife to even think about forgiving your infidelity, they must be sure that you understand how much you’ve hurt them, are genuinely sorry for this (and not just sorry you got caught), and can be confident that it will never happen again.  If they suspect that you are going to hurt them or betray their trust again, then they will never be able to have an open heart or be vulnerable.  It’s vital then that you understand why you chose to have an affair and place safeguards in your marriage (that you are both comfortable with) to ensure that it never happens again.

3.  The spouse who cheated must be willing to provide reassurance and accountability. Please understand that for a while after the affair, the spouse who was cheated on is going to need to know where the other spouse is and who they are with.  No one should fight this or have their feelings hurt over it as it’s completely understandable. Over time, the trust can be rebuild but only after seeing that time and time again, the spouse who cheated is exactly where he says.  It also helps greatly if the spouse who cheated can reassure (without prompting) his or her wife about their desirability.  It’s important that your spouse know that your affair doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with them or that you find them unattractive or undesirable. Rather, they need to know that it was an unfortunate decision on your part for which you take full responsibility.

Forgiving An Affair Is For You, Not For Them: Deciding to move on after cheating in a marriage is a completely personal decision that should be made after a lot of careful thought and examination.  But, ultimately understand that it is something that you do for yourself.  Not for your spouse.  Not for your children. For you.  Because you want to move past the suffocating negative feelings that will pull you down in the muck if you let them.

Forgiving my husband’s affair was a struggle for a very long time, but I eventually was able to do it. Women’s Self-Defense - Why Most Programs Are Wrong

Women’s self defense issues are constantly in the news and a ‘hot’ topic for conversations. It seems that everyone from police officers to karate instructors has his or her own philosophy and theories about the how’s and why’s of self defense for women and girls.

The truth is though, that many of the same techniques and tactics taught to men for self-protection simply will not work for a woman. Why?…

… because attacks perpetrated on women have, at their foundation, certain inherent problems, issues, and conditions that are often very different for men who find themselves in defensive situations. Women have to deal with things that, quite frankly, men don’t.

If this is something you’re really concerned about, you owe it to yourself to do some serious research to get more information about real-world self-defense for women
designed around issues specifically related to womens self-defense.

Now, before some of you start rolling your eyes or nodding your head in agreement, this is not a women’s lib issue or anything of the sort. It’s simply the way it is.

What kind of things make self-defense for women different? I’m glad you asked.

Well, for starters, physiologically speaking, there is a 7-to-3 strength ratio between male and female bodies. That means that if you were to stand a man and a woman, having the same height, weight, and build, side-by-side, and all things considered (health, fitness, etc.)…

Next, women are more likely to be slapped, grabbed and pinned than punched or kicked. For men, it’s just the opposite. The fact is that, most of us have been conditioned since childhood to act, play, and, yes, fight with each gender very differently. And attackers are no different.

The good news is that more and more women are being drawn to the life-enhancing benefits of the martial arts and basic self-defense programs for increasing their level of self-confidence and overall feelings of safety and security. The not-so-good news is that…

… there is a shortage of:

* Martial arts instructors who understand scientific self-defense, ‘and’ have the necessary life experience to be able to teach from a perspective that shares that experience.

After all…

… if an instructor has never been in a real-world self defense situation themselves, it will make it nearly impossible for them to teach real self defense to anyone - let alone self defense for women. It’s kind of like going to a priest of counselor for marriage counselling who has never been married themselves. They both have information passed on by others but, neither has anyway of expressing that information based on real-word knowledge.

However, there is an over-abundance of…

…so-called self-defense experts who are of the tough-guy, fighter type or the “This is Reality - Deal With it! macho-type.

These people, by their very nature are the “slugger-types” who rely and depend on speed, strength and size to win. Since self defense situations usually involve a bigger, faster, stronger attacker victimizing a smaller, less-prepared target - and, that’sexactly what most women are up against when they’re attacked…

… these instructors, and their “strike-first-and-crush-them-where-they-stand mentalities, are far from being suited, knowledgeable, or able to deliver the necessary lessons needed by women to effectively protect themselves from an assailant intent on dominating them physically.

Other Considerations for Girls and Womens Self Defense

The following is a partial list of some of the other major differences between self defense for women and men. The important thing to remember is that…

… a self-defense situation is very different from a sport or competition-based contest where the individuals are willing participants. They are evenly matched to insure for a “fair fight.” I have been in contests and I have been attacked and I can tell you without a moment’s doubt that…

… there is nothing “fair” or “even” about a real attack. NOTHING! And, once your personal space is invaded by another human being wanting to beat you to your core, you will know what I mean and never, ever, buy into the crap that most of these so-called experts are shovelling.

With that said, please know that I have not said that every self-defense or martial arts instructor is full of it. Just that you must know what you need and make sure that that’s what you’re getting. Remember - you’re not buying a couch that you can take back. A mistake in this area could literally cost you your life!

Here are some other differences between men’s and women’s training that a good program must address:

* Cultural Influences - girls have been taught from a very early age that fighting was not “lady-like.”

Oh my god! What would people think!

* Situational Self-Defense - rape and sexual assault are two of the biggest differences between the genders when it comes to suriviving an attack.

The fact that men are usually dealing with the more obvious situations (muggings and competitive (”oh-yeah! let’s go!”-type fighting), while women, and more and more young girls, are required to deal with subtle tactics like date-rape or being ambushed by a group.

Add to this the strength differential discussed earlier, and you have a very different situation, requiring very different self-protection tactics.

* Incorrect Information - I believe that the majority of teachers and instructors mean well. They aren’t out to con you. It’s just that they have no real experience to go on so they do what everyone does when they don’t know any better…

… they make assumptions that seem logical and rational within their own frame of reference.

The problem is that we’re talking about self-protection here…

… self defense for women…

… girls self-defense. Not…

… vegetable soup. Where, if you make a mistake, you can just dump the pot and start over.

As I said earlier, a mistake in a women’s self-defense situation, in any situation requiring defense against an attack from an assailant bent on damaging you, could be very, very costly indeed.
